Innovation Exchanges – a big thumbs up

Innovation Exchanges are the new ‘buzz words’ circling the water companies and it is changing the way we work with them to help find solutions to real-time problems.

For years suppliers with new product innovations have tried fairly unsuccessfully to bring on board the water companies at the research and development stage but this is all changing. Water Companies realise that by assisting in R&D products they get ahead of the game in delivering innovative, usually cost reductive products.

Innovation Exchanges are a brilliant, cost effective way to engage directly with water companies and other innovators.  Similar to a ‘Dragons Den’ approach, as a presenter you can pitch your product to a group of willing listeners. We have participated in two such events, hosted by British Water for Dwr Cymru Welsh Water and United Utilities.

Split into two groups, we were given 10 minutes to pitch our innovation which isn’t very long when you want to explain why your innovation is SO amazing. We were presenting our Aerated Reed Beds. - a technological enhancement on the more traditional  passive reed bed treatment systems. With tighter discharge consents to meet and greater volumes of wastewater to treat, aerated reed bed systems increase the treatment capabilities of reed beds and significantly reduces the land footprint required – which of course makes them cheaper to install.

Innovation Exchanges are intense, short-sharp bursts of ideas and new products but alarmingly effective. Delivering a full-blown pitch in 10 minutes is a talent in itself but then with just two minutes to answer questions it makes sure you get to the point – quick.  Problem, solution and cost-benefits all in 12 minutes –innovation at its best. We had an advantage over many of our fellow innovators as we have installed new aerated reed bed systems and retrofitted aeration into existing reed beds for other clients and so we came armed with case studies and data.

Saying that, when all the presentations were over we all waited for the killer blow – were they interested in the product or not? Water companies whilst not brutal in their assessment are honest in their feedback.  Whilst some were told that their products were not going to be given any further consideration – our presentation was of interest to all parties and we have been advised to return with more detailed presentations.

These Innovation Exchanges could be the turning point for R&D for lots of companies with great ideas who cannot commit the funds to fully explore them on their own. If the water companies can assist, even if its just allowing innovators access to their sites for trials, then all these great ideas can be moved forward.

It is thrilling to know that Innovation Exchanges can change the way we work in partnership with clients.  Let’s hope this channel of communication does not dry up anytime soon. We are elated that the water companies are opened to new possibilities and that Aerated Reed Beds are on the agenda.

If you haven’t been to one and have a great innovative product for the water companies, don’t be put off, do your research and prepare for information overload. There are several Innovation Exchanges taking place throughout the year, more information can be found on the British Water Website.

Cold weather and wetlands – do they work?

snowy reedsUnpredictable weather patterns and increasingly harsh winters have led to questions being asked about whether reed beds can continue to provide effective treatment in extreme and fluctuating conditions. Popular belief is that treatment is associated with plant growth and that winter die-off adversely affects performance, when in reality the bulk of treatment is undertaken by bacterial activity within the substrate of the bed.

The success of performance is related to creating a stable environment for bacterial growth and sizing the wetland so it can accommodate slower bacterial removal rates during the colder months.  Wetlands are used and operate successfully, all around the world including the northern United States and Canada where air temperature can remain well below freezing for extended periods. We have designed many systems to specifically treat effluent created as a direct result of winter operations, especially in the aviation sector.

Severe winters and extreme weather conditions across Europe and America over recent years have made flight safety and schedule continuity a pressing concern for airport operators. The desire to avoid airport closures and travel delays has fuelled a surge in the demand for glycol and potassium-based de-icing solutions.

Mayfield Farm deicingAs airport operators strive to keep runways clear and planes free of ice, the increased use of de-icer when it mixes with surface water creates its own unique effluent which needs treating. Heavily contaminated with glycol and acetate, airport run-off laden with de-icer can starve the receiving waters of oxygen and have serious environmental impact if not effectively treated.

Through using reed beds with Forced Bed AerationTM, we are able to treat higher levels of concentrated effluent whatever the weather.  This ensures discharge consent requirements are met on a consistent basis without having to worry about the weather.

Welcome to our new website

As 2013 gathers pace there have been changes.  It’s been on the cards for some time now and after several hundred coffees, late nights, rewording and bribery, it’s finally complete.

The application of natural wastewater treatment systems has developed at pace and to ensure you are kept up to speed with new applications and events we have re-worked the exciting site to enable you to navigate through the information with speed.

This year will see the launch of our online shop and we are in the process of stocking our shelves.  We will also be translating the website into Spanish for ARM Iberica so keep an eye out for the shopping basket and Spanish flag icons.

We’d like to thank PHD Design, Rory at JDF Consulting and Kinetic PR for the look, build and assistance with wording (I was told don’t make it so technical!!) and finally to Carlos for translating this monster of a website.  We’d like to thank everyone who tested it and gave feedback too.

To supplement the website we will also be developing regular blogs to keep the news fresh as well as utilising facebook and twitter to keep you up-to-date with not just our news but also developments in natural wastewater treatments across the world.

I hope you find our website informative and easy to navigate. If you would like to find out more, why not come and speak to us, you can find out where we will be on our events page or give us a call and we’ll come to you.

All the best for what we believe is already showing promise for being a very good year.
